DISRUPTING TRADITION,
CELEBRATING IDENTITY
brechelle LIPSCOMB
ARTIST STATEMENT
I explore the complex realities of Black identity within a society shaped by Eurocentric cultural dominance. Through garments I create using upholstery fabric, tapestry, and found textiles, I reflect on how nostalgia and resistance can coexist in both form and material. I have recently begun curating images to create collages that recount Black history and celebrate Black culture.
I DRAW INSPIRATION FROM MY CHILDHOOD,FAMILY, AND TIME SERVING IN THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS. ORIGINALLY FROM CHAMPAIGN–URBANA, I AM DEEPLY INFLUENCED BY MY EXPERIENCE IN THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS, WHERE THE DISCIPLINE AND FORMALITY OF THE DRESS BLUE UNIFORM SHAPED MY DESIGN SENSIBILITY. I TRANSFORM THESE INTIMATE INFLUENCES INTO BOLD GARMENTS. MY SIGNATURE 3381 SILHOUETTE SERVES AS A STRUCTURAL FOUNDATION FOR EXPLORING BOTH LIGHTHEARTED AND SERIOUS THEMES
